WHEN THE STREETLIGHTS CAME ON

There are surprisingly few photographs of this part of our childhood.

We did not have phones recording every ordinary afternoon. No one was documenting every bike ride, every neighborhood pack or every hour spent roaming beyond anyone’s direct supervision.

We were simply out there.

We rode whatever bikes we had, followed whoever was leading and understood one nearly universal rule: when the streetlights came on, it was time to head home.

When I began creating this piece, I searched for photographs that captured the memory as I remembered it—but very little documentation exists. Eventually, I realized that the absence of those images was part of the story.

So I recreated the scene.

I built the riders individually, placed the girls back among the boys where we actually were, reconstructed the light and shadows, and layered the finished image with the visual remnants of the television generation that helped raise us.

The result feels less like a photograph and more like a memory: imperfect, fragmented, fading at the edges—but still there.

And beneath the nostalgia is the truth I understand now:

We may have believed we were completely on our own, but we were never entirely unwatched.
